# Contractor of Record

Also known as: permit holder, licensed contractor, GC of record

The licensed contractor who pulls a permit and assumes legal responsibility for the permitted work meeting code requirements.

The contractor of record is the licensed general contractor, specialty contractor, or in some cases owner-builder who applies for and is issued a permit, thereby taking legal responsibility for ensuring the work complies with applicable codes. In Texas, pulling a permit typically requires the contractor to hold the appropriate state or local license. The contractor of record's name, license number, and contact information appear in the public permit record. Subcontractors who perform work under a GC's permit are generally not listed in the permit record.

## Why it matters for contractors

The contractor of record field on a permit identifies the GC running the job — giving subcontractors and suppliers a direct, named contact to pursue for upcoming scope packages.
