# Demolition Permit

Also known as: demo permit

A permit required before demolishing all or part of an existing structure, ensuring safe removal and proper disposal of materials including hazardous waste.

A demolition permit authorizes the complete or partial removal of an existing structure. Requirements include site protection measures, utility disconnection verification, and in many cases an asbestos or lead survey prior to demolition of pre-1980 buildings. In Texas, large commercial demolitions may also require notification to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). A demolition permit often precedes a new construction permit on the same parcel by weeks or months — making it a leading indicator of ground-up development activity.

## Why it matters for contractors

A demolition permit on a commercial or multi-family parcel is one of the earliest public signals of a redevelopment project — giving contractors a head start on pursuing the new-construction work that typically follows.
