# EV Charger Permit

Also known as: electric vehicle charger permit, EVSE permit, Level 2 charger permit

A permit required for the installation of a Level 2 or DC fast-charging electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) unit.

An EV charger permit (formally an electrical permit for EVSE) is required by most Texas jurisdictions before installing Level 2 (240V) or DC fast-charging equipment in a residence, multifamily building, or commercial property. The permit covers the dedicated circuit, panel capacity, and mounting of the charging unit. Installation must comply with NEC Article 625 and be performed by a licensed electrician. Texas has streamlined permitting for EV chargers in some cities, and the Texas Property Code limits the ability of HOAs to prohibit reasonable EV charging installations.

## Why it matters for contractors

EV charger permits are a fast-growing, high-margin single-day job category — and they frequently co-occur with or follow solar and panel upgrade permits, making them a useful cross-sell signal for electrical contractors.
