Inspection

Also known as: field inspection, code inspection, building inspection

An on-site review by a building department inspector to verify that construction work complies with approved plans and building code requirements.

A building inspection is an on-site visit by a code enforcement officer or inspector employed by the AHJ to verify that construction work in progress or upon completion meets the requirements of the approved permit drawings and applicable codes. Common inspection types include foundation, framing, rough mechanical/electrical/plumbing, insulation, and final. Inspections must be requested by the permit holder or contractor and are typically scheduled 24–48 hours in advance. Failed inspections result in a correction notice and require re-inspection before work can proceed to the next phase.

Why it matters for contractors

Passed inspections are timestamped in the permit record — giving contractors insight into a project's construction phase and how far along the job is before the next trade is needed.
