Panel Upgrade Permit
Also known as: electrical panel upgrade permit, service upgrade permit, meter main upgrade
An electrical permit for replacing or upgrading the main electrical service panel, typically to increase amperage capacity.
A panel upgrade permit authorizes the replacement or upgrade of a building's main electrical service panel — commonly from 100A to 200A or 400A service — to accommodate increased electrical loads from EV chargers, solar systems, heat pumps, or general modernization. The work involves the utility meter socket, main breaker, panel board, and grounding system, and requires inspection by the AHJ. In Texas, some utilities also require their own approval or inspection for service upgrades. Panel upgrades are among the most common standalone electrical permits filed in suburban Texas markets.
Why it matters for contractors
Panel upgrade permits are a near-perfect leading indicator of subsequent EV charger and solar installations on the same property — making them a high-value trigger for electrical, solar, and HVAC (heat pump) contractors.
