Permit Glossary
Plumbing Permit
Also known as: plumbing work permit
A permit required for the installation, repair, or modification of water supply, drain, waste, and vent plumbing systems.
A plumbing permit authorizes work on a building's water supply lines, drain-waste-vent (DWV) system, fixtures, water heaters, and gas piping. In Texas, plumbing is regulated statewide by the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners (TSBPE), which licenses all plumbers and oversees code enforcement. Plumbing permits are required for new construction rough-in, water heater replacement (in many jurisdictions), gas line work, and significant fixture additions. Inspections are required at rough-in and final stages.
Why it matters for contractors
A plumbing permit pulled concurrently with a remodel or addition permit confirms that a project is in active construction — giving plumbing subcontractors a precise lead window to approach the general contractor.
