Pool Permit
Also known as: swimming pool permit, spa permit
A permit required for the construction of an in-ground or above-ground swimming pool, spa, or hot tub on a residential or commercial property.
A pool permit authorizes the excavation and construction of an in-ground swimming pool, spa, or hot tub. Requirements typically include site plans showing setbacks from property lines and utilities, structural drawings, electrical bonding and grounding details, and in Texas, compliance with the Texas Department of State Health Services pool safety standards including barrier/fence requirements under the 'Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act' (federal) and the Texas Health and Safety Code. Pool permits also trigger ancillary electrical, plumbing, and gas permits for equipment.
Why it matters for contractors
A pool permit signals a high-discretionary-income homeowner actively investing in their property — a strong qualifier for landscaping, hardscape, outdoor lighting, and adjacent remodel contractors.
